Drawing A Day 110

Two Red Burst

Tornado's forcing their way through the area and the flowers seem to be oblivious. Grey skies and the moisture in the area seem to make these reds burst forth even stronger. Mother Nature at her best??

Drawing A Day 109

Spring Romance

There is something so sweet about witnessing a moment of love; a gentle kiss, a touch on the shoulder, fingers tips pausing on a cheek. And all of this under a tree bursting with green. Makes for a simple drawing, but says so much.

Drawing A Day 108

Trees in Woodcut Style

Still playing with the new media. Slowly discovering different ways to use "paint" to achieve texture.  Could easily get lost in the possibilities for hours at a time.
Go and enjoy an exhibition at the galleries of UMUC http://www.umuc.edu/art/arthome.shtml  in College Park. The great thing about their gallery space is that it is open 24/7. The location is in a Marriott Conference center. This month the exhibit includes 34 faculty artists from various UM affiliated schools. The work is diverse and exceptional.

Drawing A Day 109

Secret River Flows

Keep thinking about all the objects that we no longer make use of and how to re think them into sculpture, painting and other creative outlets. Record albums; I still play some, but others...saw a small exhibition of paintings on lps. I remember how expensive round canvases are and how many lps I could part with, even create art based on the music recorded. Anybody doing sculpture with old cassette and video boxes?? In the mood to put paint on "canvas".

Drawing A Day 108

Towpath Early Spring

Great getting back to the towpath for a ride or walk and seeing all the new buds, turtles, egrets, herons. Finally getting to my favorite temperatures.
Made it to the last day of the exhibition of recycled fabrics at the Embassy of Finland. Very modern building and interesting textiles. Rubber inner tubes turned in to chic belts, old tablecloths re used as dresses and purses. Seatbelts turned in to briefcases. Fun and engaging.

Man with Cat

Another great night of dancing and listening with The 19th Street Band.  Keeps me in a good mood and good shape. Learned that listening to music that is familiar opens new energy potential.

Full Moon Perfection

Howling at the moon once a month, freeing lung capacity, opening the chest, arching neck, puckered lips. Creative movement is easy to embrace if you can get over any need for embarrassment! Even more fun when you're part of a group of howlers.

Dancing in the Dark

The pure joy of a sunny morning, smiles on faces, releasing shoulders, opening up to possibilities. All things seem doable when the sun is shining. Taking time to walk with friends, lubricate the joints that have been sitting idle this winter.

Night Mountains

The number one rule of travel; BE FLEXIBLE!!! Two hours from destination, car trouble. Oh well, can't walk home. Slept well and now the car is fixed and we'll be back on the road. In fact, be flexible, is probably my favorite life philosophy. Beautiful morning, hope to be dining al fresco this evening for my Full Moon Passover Potluck. Here's to a few good howls of freedom.

One Gorgeous Bird

Comedy breaches the gap for serious issues to become talkable subjects. From insider campus jokes to national political issues the innovative group, The Lilting Banshees, gave WFU students and visitors an hour of creativity and thought provoking ideas. Great to see a level of polish and ingenuity from the under 21 set.

Bird on the Beach

How to find creativity while stuck in two and half hours of bumper to bumper traffic on 95 South? Check out the red buds blooming, tell old stories to your companion, bring good gourmet sandwiches to munch on, listen to borrowed cd's from the library. Feel at ease.

Drawing A Day 99

Sunset with the Pixies

Wow, day 99 and still going strong. I guess that must be what my 90 year old friends say every morning. I send continued strength and creativity to Kathleen Williams, age 99 and Marilee Shapiro, age 98. Two amazing sculptors, still living on their own, making art and engaging in the dialogue of life.  They are my role models.

Did some crayon portrait drawings at a restaurant last night while listening to open mic wanna be performers. Felt good to give the best one away to the subject. They seemed thrilled to get it, too. Haven't done that in years.

I appreciate all the good things that have floated my way in these past few months. I am grateful that my family is in good health and is enjoying every minute of life. Making art makes me feel alive and connects me to the rhythm of the earth. Joy is my muse!

Drawing A Day 97

Two Best Friends

How does friendship work? What draws us to new people? The energy, the look, the points of similarity or diversity, the interest in learning something new? And then what keeps it going. Friends for life-times, friends for a few months or years. What changes? I learned about cousins of my Mother's whose lives really didn't intersect until late in life. They reconnected and stayed friends. Three degrees of seperation really means we're all family, but friends are different. We choose to develop and make time to deepen these friendships or keep the relationships light. And when you open yourself to the deeper relationship you open your vulnerability too. Today my heart is open. I make time to listen to my friends and offer them energy that gives them ease.

Drawing A Day 96

Strangers

If you don't talk to people then they all stay strangers. We taught our kids, "it's okay to talk to strangers, just don't get in their cars!" It seems to have worked. We have welcomed many strangers into our lives, many have become good friends, and we feel blessed to have them. We learn new things from our new friends; through their life stories, songs and artwork. Take a chance and smile at a stranger. Make the day a bit happier for those around you.

Drawing A Day 94

Grandmother's House
Learned many new things in five hours. Go see Gail Rebhan's photo collages on the exterior of the old Babes Pool Hall at Brandywine and Wisconsin Ave NW. Go see Morgan Monceau's Diva paintings at Zim Stone Gallery in Hyattsville. Opposite sides of town. Two very different approaches to documenting the history of our culture. Both engaging and educational.

Drawing A Day 93

The Wind Eleanor
Sometimes images just pop into my hand. No pre-thoughts at all. Then the words, poetry. There is a freedom and light to this playful drawing and I guess that comes from the good chi I've been experiencing.
Promise of warm temperatures and sunny day tomorrow has me looking forward to a bike ride along the canal.

Drawing A Day 92

And the Morning Sun Comes

It's my Michaelangelo moment; when the sky speaks to me with shape and color to create a breathtaking composition. Using this software program keeps the image simple. Have you ever read "Simple Pictures are the Best"?. It's a kids picture book emphasizing how less is more. I've learned so many lessons from those early readers. Volunteer some time with a little one and share a few books. You're never too old to learn something new.

Drawing A Day 91

Inspired by Gwen and Bernie

Every time I go to an artists studio, I am awed by the sheer volume of work created. We artists have so many ideas to get out of our souls and for those that can afford materials and time to make the art the rewards are fantastic. Then there is the enormous variety of the subject matter, the use of the material, the size, shape and textures. And what really boggles the mind is how the public sees very few of these works. My mission is to make sure that each artist I exhibit is able to show a significant body of work and that the community is invited to share in this experience. Open the dialogue between viewer and creator. Stop by the Gallery at Iona and take a look.

Drawing A Day 90

Interior with Plant

Had the pleasure of creating art with children yesterday at, Christ Episcopal School, a small private school in Rockville. We focused on Spring; colors, tastes, nature, feelings, holidays and love. I was delighted to see the variety of results these 5-11 year olds created using old Smithsonian magazines as material for collage note cards. I managed to make three of my own! It is so good to connect with the kids and keep a balance of creating with elders. Intergenerational projects are proven to be healthful for all involved.

Drawing A Day 89

Pumpkin Head

Waking in the dark after a flashy lightening storm last night. Enjoyed supper by the fire pit, walked the labyrinth and then the rains started. After all the gardening I did yesterday my body feels sore in places I never really get to in a gym work out. I crunched on the first asparagus to pop up. And I've cleaned up the labyrinth; added a yoga/stretch space for those nice days! Today I will be an art teacher for elementary children, a treat, I give my self about once a year. We'll work on Spring Collages.

Drawing A Day 88

On the Road Again

I can't wait to get back to biking on the canal towpath. The peace and quiet, the natural surroundings make this 15 mile excursion a breeze. We are having our first nice day of Spring. Spent most of it outdoors so I'm late making this blog, but did not forget. Looking forward to lots more gorgeous days to be in the sun and hear the birds chirping. Make some new Spring drawings of flowers and feelings.

Amy Oaks #1
Amy Oaks #2

Hired a customer service expert to help me manage all of the inquiries about art sales from my web site. What a relief! Although my goal is to sell 5 paintings a month, it just got overwhelming to manage the shipping and correspondence.  I thought it would be nice to include her picture on the web site, but we just couldn't decide which image to use. Please let me know your preference.

Drawing A Day 86

Muddling Through
The difficulty arises when I am feeling in abundance. Pulled in many directions I go into overwhelm mode. Yoga stretching, walking, breathing deeply all help to bring me back to harmony. Like the blue sky breaking through the gray morning. A glimmer of hope for the future.
