Drawing A Day 85

View From the Bartender's Side
I am often accused of looking longer than socially acceptable at my fellow humans. I don't notice it. It is my way of storing the images to my "hard drive" creative brain storage bin for later use in drawings and paintings. When I was younger I was never without a sketch book. Carrying around the tools weighed me down. Remember those old green back packs?? I rely on my memory to collect these compositions, the nuances of lines on a mature face, the curve line of a neck meeting a shoulder. For over 40 years I have known that I see this way and gather images. I can't stop. I have managed to pause in making paintings and drawings on paper and canvas in exchange for the mouse and the "paint" software. It does not give me the same pleasure, but allows for the release of these caged images. Brain zoo?? Now there's an interesting image.

Drawing A Day 84

Sublime Morning Moments of Light

Wondering just how many drawings of trees I've done over the past 84 days. They are such wonderful subject matter. The perfect model, staying still for long stretches yet changing ever so slightly over time. The way the light hits them at different times of the day. Their bodies like dancers. One of these days I'd like to dedicate a few weeks to drawing trees. It probably is no coincidence that my family name means "of the Oak" in Russian. Dah!

Drawing A Day 83

The Dancer
Watched a ballroom dancing class at Glen Echo Park. Brought back memories of the dance classes I participated in when I was a teenager. We met in the basement of the teachers house every week and were matched up with sweaty handed nervous boys. Awkward moments. Life lessons. Steps that would be remembered for decades. It all flows back to me. Danced a little after I did the dishes. Feels good to move to good music.

Drawing A Day 82

White Bow
Inspired by the old masters. Portrait of a woman wearing a white bow. Time to make a date to walk through the National Gallery of Art. So many treasures parked so close by and I think it's been a year since I took a stroll and just breathed in the images. And except for the traveling exhibits, the museum is free. Someday, I could see myself going from museum to museum across the country.

Drawing A Day 81

Yoga Morning Practice
Prescription for life. First get out of bed. Then go directly to yoga. Do not stop to change laundry or make brunch. Feel the energy shift the minute you get into the car and park and walk over to the little yoga studio door. Enter the warm peaceful studio and breathe deeply. From your toes to the top of your head, the feeling of peace spreads its warm glow. Set your intention. AAAAAAAH!!! Namaste. Be at peace. Spend the week revisiting your intention and remembering this feeling of release and restorative energy. Repeat weekly.

Drawing A Day 80

Early Spring 6:35 AM

A gorgeous day, but colder than I'd like for early Spring. Talk of snow for tomorrow. Participated in a wonderful mosaic workshop at the African Museum of Art and it inspired my daughter to make more. She's finding it a soothing start to her day. Mosaic meditation with a side of hulu - CSI. Ah the modern creator.

Drawing A Day 78

Metro Riders
"I am creating a stress-free world for myself. Relaxation renews and refreshes me. Beauty uplifts me. Today I do a special little something to brighten my day."  I've had this posted above my pc for years. Reading the words some mornings makes me smile and encourages me to get on with my day. "A special little something" could be as simple as taking three deep breaths, or observing the people on the metro, or really tasting the delicious dinner I am eating, or making this blog post.

Drawing A Day 77

Cherry Blossoms
Growing up in the DC area I am always awed by the coming of the Cherry Blossoms. The stunning pink colors when only yellow forsythia and a few early daff's are on hand to compete. Nothing like an evening stroll around the Capitol, Tidal Basin or even some suburban streets to set off the glow. As a young student I was reprimanded for using my red and pink crayons to evoke that pink phenomenon, but my creative side was strong and persisted. This year I send healing to the people of Japan as they meet the challenges of surviving mother natures latest disaster.

March Birthday Dancers
Here's a drawing to celebrate all of the many wonderful women who celebrate their birthdays in March. The moon was amazing, the temperatures are rising and spring is budding out everywhere. Saw my first three cherry blossoms during the sunset. Hope all of your dreams come true.

Jazz Moon
The Kreeger Museum has launched a wonderful program for people with Alzheimer's Disease and their caregivers. It is modeled after Meet Me at the MoMA in NYC. Despite the fact that the DC Office on Aging is proposing to cut Senior Center budgets again this year by 35%!!!!  Will the private sector step up to the plate to insure that creative and supportive programs for elders is maintained and enhanced???? Support Iona by attending the Art of Caring Luncheon on May 4th at the Mayflower. Bring your favorite "caregiver", honor them with a donation to Iona.

Spring Landscape
Day light savings time has begun. So once again it is dark when I get up. Only benefit is the sun sets later and that gives me time to watch it set! Notice the small changes around you, light dancing from a reflection, the color of your lunch mates eyes, the sounds of wind in the trees.

Sweetness
The memory of my Dad is full on today. Would have been 88. An auspicious number. Enjoying the pleasure of the good memories. Appreciating my family and friends. Ushered at Arena last night with both of my daughters. Time is flying past. A classic to be sure, "Who's Afraid of Virgina Wolf" on the birthday of playwright Edward Albee.

Drawing A Day 67

In My Dreams
Had the pleasure of seeing Lee Goodwin's
www.lgoodwin.smugmug.com outstanding photographs at Kate thefrasergallery.com gallery in Bethesda. Unfortunately, it will be the last exhibition in that space. She is closing down her real space and will be offering artwork through the web. That makes two excellent galleries to close in Bethesda in one year. As an artist often disillusioned with the art market, I can appreciate the decision. I am happy to report that the Gallery at Iona is still thriving on a model of education and supporting artists 60 plus years young. By thinking outside the commercial gallery model it is surviving. Stop by and visit between 9-5 Monday through Friday, and by appt. iona.org

Drawing A Day 66

Wrapped in a Rose
I am challenged by so many of my daily tasks. Learning new things, developing ideas to make my clients lives easier. To recharge my chi, I make art, I listen to music, I get in touch by phone with family and friends. Yesterday one of my close friends called to say she was on an e-mail sabbatical. She has hired someone else to manage her e-mails and prioritize the information verbally. Wow! What a revolutionary idea. Now when she wants to get in touch she will use snail mail and voice or drop by.

It happens every year. I get really ready for Spring about mid March. Wishing the start was here now and not a month away...at least in the DC area. When does Spring start for you? or Spring Fever? I make a tradition of going to my acupuncturist for a seasonal tune-up. Beth Burkhardt is a fantastic acupuncture therapist as well as  a choreographer. What's your favorite healing modality? I'm curious how many different ways people have adapted to dealing with disease. What makes you feel better when you are in discomfort. Do you reach out for support? Do you get what you need?

Red Sky in Morning

"Right now, and in every now-moment, you are either closing or opening. You are either stressfully waiting for something--more money, security, affections--or you are living from your deep heart, opening as the entire moment, and giving what you most deeply desire to give, without waiting." my friend Martha's morning words of wisdom.

Restorative Day
Out of my usual schedule today and my theme is rest and restore. Preparing for my younger daughter's singing competition this evening and the arrival of my older daughter home from college. Just needed to create more balance and ease in my energy. Established and hope it will hold. I feel so grateful to have them in my life.

Drawing A Day 60

Okay, so really this drawing started yesterday with fresh laundry on the line. Inspired by my artist friend, Ronni Jolles and the Spring weather we have begun to feel. But then I realized, after the laundry came down, it would be really nice to float in a hammock. So I tweaked the drawing and voila. Make your own utopia!!

Drawing A Day 58

A Crisp Morning

Who says older folks don't drive at night! A full house attended the first public reading of Molly's play about Frances Perkins starting at 7PM last evening. The director and actors did a great job pulling us in and telling us the story of this remarkable woman. Play writing and reading groups need our encouragement and being part of the audience is a great way to improve your physical and mental well being. I look forward to more play readings at Iona, next one slated for May 2nd.
