Freezing temperatures here in October make me think of the cabana's on the Caribbean, tall thin glasses of rum punch and sunny warm days. At least the gas company will be happy with these record lows.

One Fine Rose

The winter chill begins and a few last roses hold on through the big gusty winds. Yellow, pink, coral. Roses, mums, a few zinnia and marigolds still left standing in the garden. One good frost and off they go too. Supposed to get snow flurries tomorrow. What??? It's only the end of October.

Raging Waters

Sending healing and hope to my friends in need. Sometimes we get thrown a really hard ball and feel like we're going to sink from the power of it. Lost in our struggle we forget our strategies for staying balanced; breathe, sing out, drawn, listen to a bird chirping. smell fresh baked cookies. One of  A Kind

Each leaf has it's own very personal color theme. And combined with how the sun light hits and the color of the sky as background changes the nuance of that color as well. Ah, Mother Nature. Repetition in shape, use of white line on dark background; old techniques to uncover and begin to make use of again. Spent many studio class days drawing from a model, would be fun to go back to a studio class and draw from life again.

Moon Waning

She Thinks She Knows

What gives us confidence of our knowledge? How do we know what we know? What is the best possible answer? Filled with queries today. With an abundant number of ways to make things better in the world, why do we keep missing the mark? Read the front pages of the Washington Post and counted the violent deaths. What can we do to stop this action and shift into a more peaceful quality of life?

They Dance 

Late night with the band. Watching how folks dance and engage around a neighborhood bar while listening to the band play. Used to bring my drawing tools with me and sit off in a corner and document. Now I just let my "hard drive" remember til I get to a computer. Don't know which I like better.

Blue Bear Healing Arts Studio and Gallery

It is with great pleasure that I name this old house. Built in 1947, as part of a slow urban growth from farmland to housing, it has seen three additions and grown from a humble Cape Cod to an odd barnish shape. Ah, but it's not the exterior that counts. Since we've had this house, it has been the shelter for many a foreign exchange student, several international curators, a few struggling homeless citizens and a host of family and friends. All welcome to share food and shelter, love and healing. A five year tradition of celebrating the full moon with potluck, music, poetry and fire pit continues to bring new friends from far and wide.

Early Morning Light

Back to waking up in the dark. Is this a natural process. My preference is to be awoken by the sun flooding my bedroom with warm orange light. Big appreciations to the farmers and medical staff and police and all the other over night shifts that keep these hours. I wonder what percentage of our work force this represents.

Last of the Cone Flowers

It's time to trim the hedges and clean out the dead leaves from the tropicals before bringing them inside. Looking around the studio I see so many orphan paintings wanting to be enjoyed on walls in yet unknown places. It's time to reset your indoor space for the onset of winter. If you can create a space for a painting now is a great time to purchase one from my studio. Sizes range from 9 x7 feet to 8 x10 inches. Beach Bird from my Notebook

Catching up with my technology learning curve. No computer to draw with so reverted back to pen and paper. Awkward and also a sense of relief. Our generation is always being pushed to re learn, re tool to stay up to date with technology. There must be a drawing app on my smart phone, but haven't found one yet. Suggestions? And will I be able to draw with such a small screen. Going from 9 x 7 foot paper to 18 x 24 inch paper to a mouse with a laptop and now to a 3 inch screen! Yikes. Maybe I need to be shrinking too.

One Step at a Time

I often reflect on Margaret Meade's words, We must 
remember that one determined person can make a significant difference. Every time I feel like my work is too small or not reaching out far enough, I go back to this thought. Tonight is the 2nd Annual Lollipop Kids Foundation Gala Fundraiser. Raising awareness and funds to support children with disabilities and their families. Vessels of Beauty

Early in my art education, I was told by my teacher, that every line created by a pencil can be found on the human body. That the human form is the road map for all drawing. Study the body carefully and you can draw anything. Been a long time since I had the opportunity to draw from a nude model. But those early lessons still ring in my head. My drawings come from life models in everyday settings, usually clothed!

Miles of Purple Mountain Majesty

Sometimes it's better to take the long view. Stop worrying about the minutiae and look down the road. Of course that's a balancing act of being present and reaching for the gold ring. I can remember my Mom and Dad sitting around the kitchen table discussing the "five year plan" and the "twenty year plan". Those goals helped our family stay connected and supported. As my older daughter heads to 21 I begin to see how all of the small nudges and moments of wisdom that I imparted to her have become valuable. Take time to celebrate the passing of the milestone planning marks.

Self Portrait in Tutu

I thought it might be fun to share some of my older original paintings on paper with you. This painting was created in 1984 while living in a remote village in southern Spain. I bought lovely drawing paper and gouache locally and then had more paints and brushes shipped.
